Load-Bearing Tests for Medium-High Cabinets

Time:2025-08-19 Views:1

Load-bearing tests for medium-high cabinets (120–180 cm) are critical to ensuring structural integrity, safety, and durability, verifying that the cabinet can support intended weights without sagging, warping, or collapsing. These tests evaluate both the overall frame and individual components (shelves, doors, hardware) under various conditions, adhering to international standards such as ASTM F2057 (for storage furniture) or EN 14749 (for domestic storage units).

The primary test involves static load application. Shelves are loaded with uniform weights—typically 50–100 kg per shelf, depending on the cabinet’s design and intended use—to simulate stored items like books, dishes, or tools. The cabinet is monitored for 24–72 hours to check for deflection (sagging) of shelves, which should not exceed 2 mm per meter of length to ensure usability. Excessive deflection can cause doors to misalign or items to slide, compromising functionality.

Dynamic load tests simulate real-world use, such as opening/closing doors or pulling out drawers with loaded contents. Doors are subjected to repeated opening (up to 10,000 cycles) with weights hung from handles to test hinge strength, ensuring they remain aligned and operational. Drawers, if present, are tested with full loads (30–50 kg) to verify that slides and glides can withstand repeated extension without failure.

Structural stability tests evaluate the cabinet’s resistance to tipping. A horizontal force is applied to the top edge (equivalent to 1/3 of the cabinet’s weight) to simulate accidental bumps or children pulling on doors. The cabinet must remain upright, with no permanent deformation to the frame or base. For freestanding models, anti-tip brackets (required by safety standards in many regions) are tested to ensure they anchor securely to walls, preventing tipping even under extreme loads.

Materials are also assessed: wood shelves are checked for cracking, metal frames for bending, and particleboard or MDF for delamination. Passing these tests ensures that medium-high cabinets can safely serve their intended purpose—whether in residential, office, or commercial settings—providing reliable storage for years to come.
